Monemvasia
Discover the story around you.
A Living Castle Town
For almost a thousand years, Monemvasia has remained one of Europe's few medieval castle towns where people still live, work and welcome visitors every day. It is not a monument frozen in time—it is a place where history continues to unfold.
But that's only the beginning...
Why Monemvasia?
Monemvasia literally means “Single Entrance,” The name comes from the Greek words mone (single) and emvasia (entrance).
For centuries, this was the town's only land entrance. Protected by walls and sea, Monemvasia became one of the Mediterranean's best-defended medieval castle towns.
One entrance. A thousand years of stories.
The Upper Town
Where Monemvasia reaches the sky.
Most visitors never discover this place.
Once home to nobles, soldiers and the fortress's defenders, the Upper Town is now one of Greece's most spectacular hidden ruins.
From here, the entire castle, the sea and centuries of history unfold beneath your feet.
Some views have to be earned.
A Castle of Churches.
Monemvasia was once home to more than forty churches.
For a medieval town this size, that was extraordinary.
Grand Byzantine temples stood beside tiny family chapels hidden between homes and narrow alleys.
Many still survive.
Others remain as beautiful ruins waiting to be discovered.
